Monica’s Happy Tummy Tonic

Whether you struggle with chronic digestive discomfort or the occasional bloat from a night out of indulging, this delicious tea medley will have your tummy thanking you in no time. This drink is super easy to make and the ingredients are low cost. I always recommend fresh, local ingredients when you have access to them, but use whatever is at your disposal.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 large handfuls of fresh mint (1 bundle)

  • 1 small knob of ginger, chopped (approx. ¼ cup chopped)

  • 1 small knob of turmeric, chopped- see notes

  • Ground black pepper

  • Juice of 1 lemon

  • 1-2 Tbsp pure honey or agave (optional)

Preparation

  1. Add all ingredients except for lemon and honey to a medium sized saucepan or large tea kettle and fill with water. Bring water to a boil for 5 minutes, then turn the heat off and let steep for 10 minutes.

  2. Add the lemon juice and honey and stir until the honey is dissolved.

  3. Transfer tea mixture to a large jar or airtight container and place in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight.

  4. Strain the mint, ginger, and turmeric from the liquid and discard.

  5. Enjoy hot or iced with a lemon wedge or extra mint.

Notes

  • Fresh turmeric is always best, but if you don’t have access to it you can use turmeric powder. The powder will give the tea a chalkiness, so fresh is always recommended.

  • Black pepper is crucial for the activation of curcumin, which is the active ingredient in turmeric. Always pair these two together for optimal results.

  • You can drink the tea hot after letting it steep for 10 minutes on the stove, but letting it sit for several hours/overnight yields the best flavor.

Nutrition information

  • Ginger and turmeric are both natural anti-inflammatory foods. They help reduce inflammation and fight off cell damaging compounds called free radicals.

  • Both ginger and mint are anti-nausea agents and can help aid an upset stomach.

  • Ginger is a prokinetic, meaning it helps promote the movement in our digestive track, which will ease bloating and discomfort.

  • Citrus fruits, such as lemons, offer a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants, as well as immune support.
