Staying Active During Cold Months
It's inevitable–the cooler weather and shorter days have set in, and for some of us, that means lower motivation to go workout. Even the biggest workout enthusiasts, like myself, have difficulty staying dedicated to an exercise routine.
Even though exercise is essential for your mental and physical health year-round, it's arguably even more critical when vitamin D levels sink and, for some folks, when Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) sets in.
Here are some tips and tricks for getting the blood flowing through your body this winter so you can stay on top of your self-care:
Take a nature walk: Bundle up, grab some friends and family, a hot beverage, and head to your local park to soak in some Vitamin D. Even though winter brings overcast, it's still beneficial to be outside when it looks a bit grey.
Holiday lights and markets: Visit your local gardens after sunset to stroll amongst holiday lights or spend an afternoon booth shopping at a local market. It's a great way to get your steps in and celebrate the season.
Online classes: If you want to stay semi-cozy, stream a yoga, stretching, or dance class on YouTube.
Deep clean the house: Yes, cleaning absolutely counts as a form of movement!
Step into the gym: Start small and commit to getting yourself to the gym. Feel free to abbreviate the workout or go in without a plan and do what feels good, whether bicep curls or core strength. The important thing is to start the habit of getting there!
Remember, the important thing is to get some activity each day, no matter what that looks like!
